It is a wide spread belief that all of the  LTTE leaders who had conducted the 26 years long Sri Lankan civil war for claiming divide one third of land areas of the island for a  self proclaimed ethnic homeland have been killed along with 140,000 civilians at their defeat in 2009 by the Sri Lankan government forces.  However, after a few years later, while at conducting the Government census, it was found only a difference of 7,000 people between pre and post war censuses. More than 300,000 people were found living mainly in Europe, Canada and Australia under refugee status. Many of the LTTE leaders believed to be killed were found in Sri Lanka itself and identified in different countries, living in different names.
